The French automotive manufacturing segment is now the 5th largest in the EU. It is dropping momentum, particularly since the crisis. 418 groups belong to the automotive segment & account for nine tenths of the production of the segment. In relation to other manufacturing segments, the commercial part is more established within these groups, particularly the multinationals.

The French balance of trade is in deficit with compare to automotive products owing to imports from foreign, mostly German, manufacturers. Though French multinational groups are still donating positively to the balance of trade, they have situated the majority of their manufacturing processes outside France to serve the domestic markets & to be re-exported to France.

China, has become the major manufacturer in the world since 2010, produces mostly to satisfy its local market: imports & exports, with volumes around 1 Mn units in current years, each represent 5 percent of production. The EU (28 states) is the 2nd largest producing area in the world, thanks to development in the local market & dynamic exports. In North America, with Mexico, production is stable & remains at a very great level. Production is destined for the domestic market & exports represent only 13 percent of production. Imports, on the other hand, represent 30 percent of production.

French Manufacturers in the New EU Member States:

In the 2019, vehicle production improved (+5 percent to more than 4 Mn vehicles) & reached a new record level. New vehicle sales improved by 8 percent to 1.6 Mn units. The difference between production & sales of new vehicles is thus 2.4 Mn vehicles. The domestic market for new vehicles has surpassed the level observed in the year 2007 (+5%).

French groups have been present commercially in this zone for many years & also have industrial places: PSA in Slovakia, the Czech Republic & Poland, Renault in Slovenia & Romania. All of these places accounted for about 1Mn units in the year 2019. New vehicle registrations show volumes of nearly 420,000 units in the year 2018 for French groups. These figures are estimated to rise, given the low car densities observed, compared to Western Europe.
