John Deere Just Launched a Sprayer That Thinks Like a Farmer – and It Is Saving 31 Million Gallons of Herbicide a Year
The 500R flagship sprayer pairs 98% application accuracy with an AI vision system that identifies individual weeds in real time. In a market heading toward USD 4.83 billion, this is not an incremental upgrade. It is a category reset.
Here is a number that should stop every farmer and every agrochemical company in their tracks. John Deere‘s See & Spray AI system helped farmers avoid spraying more than 31 million gallons of herbicide mix in 2025 alone.
Not reduce. Not optimize. Eliminate. Completely. Because the system identified, in real time, which parts of the field had weeds – and which did not – and only activated nozzles where they were needed.
The Global Agricultural Sprayer Market, valued at USD 2.65 billion in 2024 and projected to reach USD 4.83 billion by 2032 at a CAGR of 7.8%, according to Maximize Market Research, is entering a technological inflection point. And John Deere has just raised the baseline for what precision spraying means.
The 500R: Every Drop Where It Counts
Unveiled at Agritechnica 2025, the 500R is John Deere’s flagship self-propelled sprayer – and it is built around a single engineering philosophy: not a single drop wasted, not a single weed missed.
The machine combines three proprietary systems to achieve what Deere calls 98% application accuracy in field conditions:
- PowrSpray: a dual-circuit pump that adjusts output from minimum to maximum in under three seconds, maintaining a consistent application rate even when forward speed changes
- ExactApply: individual nozzle control using pulse width modulation, keeping droplet size constant across a large speed range with up to 11 different application rates across the boom simultaneously
- BoomTrac Pro 2: automatic boom height compensation that tracks terrain in real time, ensuring uniform coverage even on uneven ground
The 500R is available in two tank configurations – 4,000 litres and 5,000 litres – with boom widths of 30 or 36 metres, a 285-horsepower engine, and travel speeds up to 50 km/h.
MMR Insight: The 500R’s value proposition is not speed or capacity. It is the elimination of the gap between the agronomic prescription and what actually lands on the crop. That gap has historically cost farmers billions in misapplied chemistry.
See & Spray: The AI That Reads the Field
Separately from the 500R hardware, John Deere’s See & Spray Premium platform – now available as both a factory install and a retrofit Precision Upgrade for MY18 and newer sprayers – is proving its commercial value at scale.
The results from 2025 season data are striking:
- 31 million gallons of herbicide mix saved across the See & Spray customer base in a single season
- Third-party university research found See & Spray users yielded two additional bushels per acre on average, with some growers reaching 4.8 additional bushels
- The technology is now available as a factory option on new Deere and Hagie sprayers, and as an upgrade kit for existing machines – dramatically expanding the addressable install base
Final Take
The agricultural sprayer has always been a delivery mechanism. John Deere is turning it into an intelligent agronomic decision system – one that sees the field, reads it, and applies chemistry only where biology demands it.
In a market under pressure from input cost inflation, herbicide resistance, and sustainability regulation, the sprayer that wastes nothing and misses nothing may be the most commercially important piece of farm equipment of the next decade.
